Improvement of a named therapeutic by tailoring it to specific patients using pharmacogenomic strategies.
An extended coursework in the form of a case study (~2500 words) assessment assessing the improvement of a named therapeutic by tailoring it to specific patients using pharmacogenomic strategies. Genomic information can be extremely valuable in targeting a group of patients for treatment or conversely excluding a group of patients who might not benefit.
Guidance on the content of this literature review is given below and will be further discussed in a tutorial in weeks 4 and 6.
The report must contain at the top of the first page: your student number, the unit code and assignment number, and the word count (excluding references). The main body of the writeup should contain the following:
An introduction (500-600 words) to the topic – Describe the background of the topic with good literature coverage (check discussion section regarding citing original research) and the rationale for choosing the therapy mode,methodology for searching the published literature, and the aims and objectives;
Results (600-800 words)- This section will include the description of results from the therapy mode which you will develop further to tailor it to specific patients. You have to put figures and tables as necessary to describe the existing therapy. Describe pharmacogenomic strategy that can be applied to a new set of patients based on their genomic information.
Discussion (600-800 words)- In this section you will discuss your interpretation of the chosen therapy mode and possible benefit and weaknesses of this approach. Detailed analysis of the therapy mode and how it can be targeted toparticular patient groups. Include peer-reviewed original research articles, which are mostly recent. However, older original articles can be used if you do not find a recent supporting article. Review articles may be used as a basis to guide you to appropriate primary research and as sources that summarise key findings;
How does this assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?
The assessment will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate an independent research and critical thinking on how to present data via written report and become familiar with word processing and referencing.
This assessment will also give you opportunity, to understand in more details the fundamental principles of pharmacogenetics and how it can be used in therapy.
