Algal bloom is caused by cyanobacteria commonly referred to as blue green algae. As a result of climate change and the consequential political inertia, a calm and warm water habitat exists which is a suitable environment for the bacteria to thrive. This is accelerated with the ever-warming climate causing multifold growth and spread of this bacterium and hence algae blooms. The spread of algae blooms is facilitated when the existing water ways are modified hence the natural river course is interfered with such the flow volume and capacity is significantly impacted. This particularly the case in the article where the swamp has been occasionally dredged and filled and in certain occasions diverted to provide a dry ground for real estate development.

At individual level, I would encourage that in any undertakings that seek to modify the existing natural habitat, community participation should be advocated. Individuals can also propose or come up with environmentally sustainable methodologies and approaches to issues to ensure minimal environmental impact.
