NURS 494 Leadership and Management in Nursing

The course is organized into three modules, each containing a set of lessons:

Module One: consists of three Lessons, introducing you to some of the essential concepts of leadership, management, and followership and power and politics in organizations; nursing roles and staffing; healthcare in the Canadian context; and change and healthcare culture.

Module Two: also consists of three Lessons focussing on decision-making, team building, managing conflict, and financial leadership and accountability in nursing.

Module Three: consists of four Lessons dealing with professional issues in nursing including: workforce issues, motivation and performance, quality of work-life issues, quality improvement, diversity, and ethics in healthcare, and professional and career development

Course Outcomes

On completion of this course, you should be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of selected nursing management and leadership theories and their application to nursing practice.

2. Analyze nursing problems and issues experienced in health care settings and identify strategies for leading the implementation of change.

3. Examine ethics in nursing practice and their implications for leadership.

4. Identify leadership styles and skill sets and explore their application to management models in nursing practice.

5. Discuss strategies to improve the quality of care delivery in selected health care settings.

6. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills throughout the course.

7. Utilize resources for optimizing personal and professional development and maintenance
