Introduction to Te Ao Maori Concepts

Demonstrate your knowledge of Te Ao Maori concepts, the influences of colonisation, urbanisation and legislation/social policy that have shaped contemporary M?ori identity, Hauora M?ori and Maori birthing practices and knowledge.

Demonstrate your understanding of the significance of te Tiriti o Waitangi to healthcare provision to M?ori, including how you will incorporate initiatives/strategies and guidelines into your midwifery practice with w?hine M?ori and wh?nau.

Mason Durie, in Whaiora, states that; “M?ori live in diverse cultural worlds.  There is no one reality nor is there any longer a single definition which will encompass the range of M?ori lifestyles… A M?ori identity, even when vigorously defended, cannot be presumed to mean a conventional M?ori lifestyle” (Durie, 1999, p. 215).

• Introduce concepts of Te Ao Maori including tikaka/tikanga, whanau/hapu/iwi and whenua in relation to Hauora Maori.  

• Discuss the impacts of colonisation, urbanisation and legislation/social policies on Maori identity, Hauora Maori and Maori birthing practices and knowledge. 

   
• Describe and discuss the significance of the te Tiriti o Waitangi articles in the provision of health care initiatives, strategies and guidelines in reshaping Maori identity, reconnecting whanau/ hapu/ iwi and Maori reclaiming Tino Rangatiratanga in their birthing practices and knowledge. •  Now discuss how you will incorporate one of these initiatives or strategies and guidelines into your midwifery practice when supporting wahine Maori and whanau to reach their potential.
