Although she dies in the morning, her remarks are not to be taken literally because they are superstitious. She could have seen it or someone else.

4. In Tillie Olsen’s story titled” I stand Here Ironing” (p, 9) events can change in a historical situation but not the truth. Staged in the war years, the story the narrator does not remember the occurrences well, which means historical facts can have distortions. However, it s a fact that there was war in the 1940s because there was suffering, unpreparedness and uncertainties. The truth about its specific dates and location shows that truth cannot change. The characters in the story also remain as the present situation dictates. The mother acts her role and the children depend on her for guidance.

B. Unit 2: Is conflict necessary?

Connell Richard’s “The Most Dangerous Game” (p, 213) has a background on why some people still enjoy physical confrontation when a peaceful world has greater benefits for everyone. The author questions the role of violence in computer games, and sports. In the story a character called, Whitney considers hunting “the best sport in the world” because of the human amusement but does not consider the outcome of the animal. As a result, the author disputes any kind of conflict whether it is between animals and humans or people themselves.

C. Unit 3: Is knowledge the same as understanding?

Anaya Robert in “A Celebration of Grandfathers” gives an insight into New Mexico and the influence of Americans and Spanish (p, 443). It brings out cultural issues and the spread of knowledge to raise issues as to whether cultural interference shapes knowledge.

Discuss the role of love in three of the texts you read in Units 1, 2, or 3.

Love in the text “I Stand Here Ironing” by Tillie Olsen, shows a family bond. In the story, love unites the family as Susan, Emily and Ronnie look up to their mother for support in a distressing time of war. Emily shows signs of missing out on paternal love (p, 10) as she shows withdrawal signs. Maternal love from a caring mother may not always work when the mother tries helplessly to show her daughter that she is valued more than the household chores (p, 11).

Choy, Watson’s “The Jade Peony” (p, 204) explains the love that his grand mother gave to the whole family. Her illness was heartbreaking for everyone, especially when she spoke about death. The narrator describes his grand mother as a likeable personality loved in the neighborhood. Out of love, she took her grandson for shopping, made them toys and they spent time together.

5. Anaya Rodolfo, in “A Celebration of Grandfather’s” (p, 443) Shows a story of generations and culture through nurture as the old share with the young.

Tillie Olsen’s symbolism in” I stand Here Ironing” describes ironing as an object of control (P, 9). It presses the dress against its will in an ironing process hence the daughter is expected to withstand the pressures of depression, fear and warfare.
