U22334 Design of Structural Elements
Answered
Task:
Question 1
Being a structural engineer in an engineering design office, you are asked to design typical internal beams and a column using Euro Codes for a school building at University Campus. The schematic floor plan of the classroom and the relevant floor loads are shown below. You are required to write in maximum 2,500 words design report before the construction of the project. Your report should include the Euro code required calculations and explanation in proper wording. Detailed design of steel structural beam using appropriate EC 3. Note: Make reasonable assumptions on all data and specifications required on the proposed design.
Design the beam, C3-C5 as a steel beam. Lateral and torsional restraints are assumed at the supports and at the point where incoming beams are connected to it. Both flanges are free to rotate on plan at these points.
1. Work out the Design Action and draw the bending moment and shearing force diagrams for the simply supported beam, C3-C5
2. Section choice, moment check, shear check, moment and shear checks, and shear buckling check. 15 marks
3. Complete Lateral Torsional Buckling check. 20 marks
4. Complete Deflection check at Serviceability Limit State
Question 2
Design the following simply supported reinforced concrete beam in accordance with EC2.
Learning Outcomes:
• Apply the basic philosophies of structural engineering design
• Employ appropriate EC design codes for a range of common structural steel and reinforced concrete elements
• Carry out detailed design of simple structural elements and present information in the form of EC codes
• Analyze loading path in buildings and formulate calculations of basic structural elements
